Leading Causes of Death
Hypertension
The biggest risk factor that leads to heart disease in the Haitian population is hypertension. The Haitian community is well known for their abidance of daily exercise and their consumption of raw food, such as rice, produce, and nuts (Jean-Charles, 2014). Although they follow have access to fresh produce and walk more than most communities, they add an abundance of salt to their diet. According to Roger Jean-Charles, on average Haitians consumes approximately 30 - 35 grams of salt daily (Jean-Charles, 2014). This excessive salt consumption facilitates the hypertension crisis in Haiti.

Ischemic heart disease is the leading cause of death in Haiti (CDC Global Health - Haiti 2019). Following heart disease, the next leading causes of death are stroke, lower respiratory infections, and neonatal disorders.

Like Haiti, the United States of America's leading cause of death is also heart disease.
